Shannon H. Smallwood, LLB '92 has been appointed to the Supreme Court.  Shannon is Northwest Territories first Dene Supreme Court judge.  Somehow, she still doesn't think of herself as a role model.  Read the full article.

On February 2, 2012, Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP (Blakes) welcomed as a new partner U of C alumna, Melanie Gaston (LLB 2001). Melanie practises in litigation and dispute resolution. She has broad experience in commercial litigation, with an emphasis on securities, energy matters, contractual disputes, insurance law, class actions, product liability and commercial landlord disputes.

The Winter 2012 issue of U Magazine features Faculty of Law alumna, Rena Krasnow (LLB 1992).  The article,  "Fashion meets function: Alumna Rena Krasnow finds a career that fits just right:, discusses her role as fashion director and chief operating officer with Aquatalia Footwear.  

University of Calgary - 2011 QC Appointments
On December 30th, 2011, the Queen's Counsel announcements were released.  More than 100 members of the Alberta Bar are being recognized for their contributions to the legal profession and their communities.  The Faculty of Law at the University of Calgary is proud to honour six (6) sessional instructors and eleven (11) law alumni.  Read the full article, here.

Julie Johal (LLB 2006) is one of three new associates to join McQuarrie Hunter LLP in Surrey, BC.  McQuarrie Hunter LLP is one of the largest law firms in Surrey.  The announcement appeared in the Vancouver Sun.

Khatera Haidery (LLB 2009) was the subject of a Calgary Herald story on July 11, 2010 on the occasion of her admission to the bar by former Dean and now Madam Justice Sheilah Martin. Among other things, the story illustrates the value of the Faculty of Law's admission process which considers each applicant individually, looking for those who have more than outstanding grades to offer the community and profession.

The Honorable Judge Monica Bast, LLB '86, Assistant Chief Judge of the Provincial Court of Alberta, was appointed to the Court of Queen's Bench of Alberta, effective September 8, 2009. Justice Bast has sat on the provincial bench since May 2006. She was the first woman appointed to the bench in Central Alberta. >> more  

Congratulations to Alum Faye Morning Bull, LLB'09, who received the Dr. Olive Dickason Award from the U of C Native Centre at the Native Centre Graduation Ceremony on June 13. The annual award recognizes the accomplishments of an Aboriginal student who has overcome extreme adversity and life challenges to achieve success. >> more

Alumni Shirzad Ahmed is one of eight Albertans to win the province's highest honour: the Alberta Order of Excellence. Shirzad is being recognized for his service and leadership in the areas of human rights, international humanitarian relief and support for immigrants and refugees. Among the 105 Alberta lawyers who were appointed to Queen's Council on Dec. 31, 2009 are U of C law school's alum and sessional instructors, including: Karen Gainer, Kenneth Potter, Patricia Hensley, David Linder, Gillian Marriott, Dalton McGrath, Lloyd Robertson, Perry Spitznagel, Murray Stooke, Anthony Young, and David Younggren. >> more 

The Honourable Paul R. Jeffrey, LLB'87, has been appointed a Judge of the Court of Queen’s Bench for Alberta. Justice Jeffrey replaces Mr. Justice D. G. Hart who resigned effective April 2, 2009. He was a partner with Jeffrey Twyman LLP since 2008, associate with Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP from 2001-2007, and employed by TransCanada PipeLines Limited from 1990–2001. >> more
