N. Murray Edwards Chair in Jurisdiction and Business Law

The “N. Murray Edwards Chair in Jurisdiction and Business Law” was created in 2009 through the generosity of N. Murray Edwards, a Calgary businessman, a prominent philanthropist in the city, and one of the key individuals involved in the building of Canadian Natural Resources Limited, one of Canada’s largest resource companies.

The Faculty seeks applications from scholars with an international reputation in either constitutional law and policy (with a particular emphasis on provincial-federal relations) or corporate law (including securities law), and with some experience in the natural resources sector. The Chair holder will provide intellectual leadership and mentoring in the Faculty of Law and within the broader community and will be a leading researcher facilitating research collaboration within and beyond the Faculty. The Chair holder will teach in areas related to the mandate of the Chair in the JD and graduate law programs, conduct an independent program of research, supervise graduate students, and provide appropriate committee and administrative service to the Faculty and the University. Depending upon his or her area of expertise, the Chair will have the opportunity to take a leadership role in the Faculty’s Centre for Resources, Energy and Environmental Law.

The Chair will be appointed to the Faculty of Law as either an Associate or Full Professor for an initial term of 5 years and will be eligible for renewal.

The Faculty of Law offers a JD degree, a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate, an LLM degree (by thesis or course work) and has a small PhD program. The Faculty has a student body of 300 JD students and 45 graduate students and a complement of 19 full time equivalent faculty members. The Faculty’s recently adopted strategic plan focuses on resources, energy and environmental law (also the focus of the graduate program) and professional skills development as two areas in which the Faculty seeks to build excellence and enhance our international reputation.

For further information about the Faculty see www.law.ucalgary.ca  The Faculty of Law is one of the supporting Faculties of the Institute for Sustainable Energy, Environment and Economy (ISEEE, www.iseee.ca) and the School of Public Policy (http://policyschool.ucalgary.ca) and the Chair will have an opportunity to collaborate with researchers in these centres.

Academic tenure track positions

Position description (see also University of Calgary Careers Job ID 1593)

The Faculty of Law at the University of Calgary is seeking to make tenure-track appointments.

Calgary Law is in the midst of a period of growth and renewal. In its new strategic plan, Energy. Skills. Excellence, the school has set itself the dual goals of enhancing its international eminence in the areas of energy, environmental and natural resources law and of continuing its position of national leadership in the area of skills education. As part of this, along with the recently-established Murray Edwards Chair, Calgary Law is looking to appoint two tenure-track members of faculty: one at the Assistant Professor level in the area of Energy, Environmental and Natural Resources Law, and a mid-career appointment at the Associate or full Professor level in the area of Business Law.

The successful candidates will be expected both to teach core JD courses, and to be involved in the graduate program. An active research agenda is expected of all members of faculty, and peer-reviewed external research funding is increasingly valued.

Calgary Law is one of Canada's youngest law schools, and it has the good fortune to be located in Canada's most enterprising city, and amidst one of the most dynamic legal markets in North America. Since its founding in 1976, the law school has sought to combine theory and skills in its approach to legal education. The Faculty takes its teaching mission extremely seriously, and it is a source of pride to the school that Calgary Law graduates now occupy positions of leadership across all facets of the legal profession, as well as in the judiciary, government, and in industry. As might be expected, the Faculty has particularly close relations with the Calgary Bar.

The Faculty offers the JD, as well as a specialized LLM in Energy, Environmental and Natural Resources Law. The school also has a small cohort of PhD students, and this year a new post-graduate Certificate program was introduced. A joint JD/MBA program exists with the Haskayne School of Business, and other joint programs are in the offing.

The University of Calgary is one of Canada’s top research-intensive universities, with more than 31,000 students in fourteen Faculties, eighty-five research institutes and centres, and 6500 faculty and staff members. The University has the ambition of being recognized as one of Canada’s top five research universities by 2016, the year of the University’s golden anniversary. One of the University’s strongest assets is its location in the City of Calgary. Recently named by the Economist Intelligence Unit as one of the top five most livable cities in the world, Calgary is the hub of Canada’s energy industry. It is also a focal point for tourism and high-tech manufacturing.  In 2010, Mercer rated Calgary as the world’s top Eco-city.

Applicants must possess an LLB/JD, as well as an advanced degree in Law or other relevant discipline at the time of appointment. Candidates for appointment in the area of Business Law should also have a proven track-record of high-impact research and scholarship. Given the premium placed on collegiality within Calgary Law, candidates will also be expected to demonstrate a genuine commitment to constructive participation in the life of the school and the University.

The anticipated start date is July 1, 2012, but alternate dates may be considered for exceptional candidates.
