Professor Jassmine Girgis joined the Faculty of Law at the University of Calgary in 2008. Prior to that, she was a member of the Faculty of Law at the University of Western Ontario. Professor Girgis teaches, researches and writes in the areas of director and officer liability, corporate, commercial, contract and bankruptcy and restructuring law. In 2007, she received a Second Annual Lloyd Houlden Research Fellowship from the Canadian Insolvency Foundation to undertake research in the area of director and officer liability to creditors during insolvency; she presented her research findings across Canada in 2008 and published her findings in the McGill Law Journal. In 2010, she received the INSOL Scholar Fellowship for the Americas from INSOL International. She has spoken at the Canadian Law and Economics Conference (CLEA), the Commercial and Consumer Law Workshop, the Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy Research Symposium, the Insolvency Chapter for the Canadian Bar Association, the Annual Review of Insolvency Law (ARIL), INSOL Europe, and INSOL International. She serves as the Book Review Editor for the Canadian Business Law Journal, the Academic Member of the editorial review board for the Canadian Association of Insolvency and Restructuring Professionals (CAIRP) and she is the Secretary of the Board of Directors of the Canadian Insolvency Foundation (CIF). Before joining Western, Professor Girgis was awarded the Paul Martin Scholarship, a full scholarship to undertake her graduate work at the University of Cambridge, where she graduated in 2006. Prior to that, she was the Silver Medalist in her graduating year from Western Law (2004) and served as the Law Clerk to the Honourable Mr. Justice J. Edgar Sexton of the Federal Court of Appeal in 2005. Her Bachelor of Arts was obtained at the University of Calgary. In 2010, Professor Girgis was the recipient of a University of Calgary Starter Grant. She is currently undertaking research on Corporate Restructuring. Professor Girgis was appointed as the INSOL International Scholar to represent the Americas for 2010-2011. INSOL International is a world-wide federation of national associations for accountants and lawyers who specialise in turnaround and insolvency. An INSOL International Scholar is responsible for issuing quarterly reports on current legislative and case law developments relevant to international insolvency in chosen jurisdictions in their respective region. |
